Rust server requirements

What the server needs before you pick a size. 4 GB of RAM is the minimum, and the table below sizes it by player count.

RAM
4 GB minimum. Every extra gigabyte is $1 a month and can be added or removed later without a reinstall.
CPU
The heaviest game we host per player: entity counts, building and AI on big maps. A 3,000 size map with 50 players wants a fast core and 12 GB or more.
Disk
Map generation and the server take 10 GB or more; a populated world grows past that.
Ports
One UDP game port, a query port and RCON, assigned for you.
Mods and plugins
Oxide (uMod) and Carbon plugins uploaded to the plugins folder; server-side only, players need nothing.
Your existing world
Upload a map save or set a seed and size; wipes are a setting or a scheduled task.

RAM by player count

Sizing by player count. Start small and add RAM later in a couple of clicks, with no reinstall. For a Minecraft server with plugins, mods or Bedrock players, the RAM calculator sizes it from what servers hosted here use.

How to make a Rust server

Your own Rust server means your rules: map size, wipe schedule, and who plays. FadeHost handles the heavy lifting: Rust servers are RAM-hungry and update weekly.

  1. 1

    Create your server

Start the free 7-day trial (no credit card) or pick a plan. 4 GB is the floor for a small map; 8 GB+ is realistic for 100+ player maps. Then hit Create Server in the panel, choose Rust and your region, and the server installs itself. Your server's address and port appear on the server page as soon as it's up.

  2. 2

    Pick map size and seed

Set the world size, seed, server name and description from the Settings tab. Forced wipes land the first Thursday of each month with Rust's update, so schedule restarts around them.

  3. 3

    Join the server

In Rust press F1 to open the console and run client.connect with your server's address and port, or find it in the server browser under its name. First boot takes a few minutes while the map generates.

What the panel hands you

Address
On the server page as soon as it is up, port and all.
Console and files
Live console, a file manager and SFTP, from the first minute.
Backups
Daily, with one-click restore and a backup you can take by hand before a risky change.
If it goes wrong
The crash doctor reads the log and tells you the cause in plain words.

Start from a preset

When you create a Rust server, pick one of these and every setting is filled in. Change any field, or save a running server's setup as your own preset.

Vanilla PvP

Standard 4500 map, 50 slots.

  • Player slots: 50
  • World size: 4500
  • No PvE

Small group

A 2500 map for a few friends, 10 slots.

  • Player slots: 10
  • World size: 2500
  • No PvE

PvE

No player damage, 25 slots.

  • Player slots: 25
  • World size: 3500
  • PvE

What a Rust server costs

You pay for RAM, not for the title: a server slot is $2.50 a month with 1 GB and 30 GB of storage, and every gigabyte after that is $1. A year is ten months. The same subscription runs Rust today and anything else we host tomorrow.

Who can join

The honest version, so nobody buys a server their friends cannot reach.

Platforms

PC on Steam. Console Rust is a separate game and cannot join PC servers.

Crossplay

PC only.

Regions and latency

Pick Europe or North America when you create the server. North America has nodes on the east coast and the west coast, Europe in the west, all on NVMe storage with DDoS protection in front. Players on the same continent as the server see 20 to 60 ms, which Rust handles well; a group split across the Atlantic should host where most of them are. Changing region later is a backup, a new server in the other region, and a restore.

Frequently asked questions

How do Rust wipe schedules work on a hosted server?
Rust force-wipes every first Thursday of the month when Facepunch updates. Between those, you choose: many communities map-wipe weekly or bi-weekly and keep blueprints. The panel's scheduler can automate your wipe day: map seed change, restart and announcement included.
How much RAM does a Rust server need?
Rust is the heaviest game we host: 8 GB minimum for a 3000-size map, 12 GB recommended for 3500-4500 maps or 50+ players. RAM use grows with entity count, so long-wipe servers with huge bases need more headroom.
Can I run Oxide/uMod or Carbon plugins?
Yes. Install Oxide (uMod) or Carbon through the panel and drop plugins into the oxide/plugins folder via the file manager. Permissions, groups and plugin configs are all editable from the browser.
How do I get my server listed and found in-game?
Set your server name, description and tags in the panel, and it appears in the Community tab automatically. A good description, active admins and a stable wipe schedule matter more than anything for player retention.
Can I customise map size and seed?
Yes, both are panel settings. Procedural maps take a few minutes to generate on first boot after a change. Custom maps from RustMaps and similar are supported by URL.
Do you protect against DDoS attacks? Rust servers get hit a lot.
Every server sits behind enterprise DDoS protection at no extra cost. Rust communities are a favourite target, especially around wipe day. Mitigation is automatic and your players shouldn't notice a thing.
