Minecraft: Java Edition server requirements

What the server needs before you pick a size. 2 GB of RAM is the minimum, and the table below sizes it by player count.

RAM
2 GB minimum. Every extra gigabyte is $1 a month and can be added or removed later without a reinstall.
CPU
One fast core matters most: worldgen, mob AI and redstone run on a single thread. Fresh chunks are the biggest lag source, so pregenerate.
Disk
A vanilla world starts under 1 GB and grows with exploration; modpacks add 1 to 3 GB of mods. 30 GB is included, more is a dollar per 10 GB.
Ports
One TCP port for Java, assigned for you; a UDP port is added when Bedrock crossplay is on.
Mods and plugins
Mods on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, plugins on Paper and Purpur, 1,300 modpacks and thousands of mods and plugins from the Resources tab, or upload jars yourself.
Your existing world
Upload a world folder through the file manager or SFTP, or pull a whole server from another host with the importer.

Measured on our own fleet

Minecraft: Java Edition servers on FadeHost in the last 30 days sit on 4 GB (median). Typical memory use with players online: 5.6 GB. Idle: 1.3 GB.

RAM by player count

Sizing by player count. Start small and add RAM later in a couple of clicks, with no reinstall. For a Minecraft server with plugins, mods or Bedrock players, the RAM calculator sizes it from what servers hosted here use.

How to make a Minecraft: Java Edition server

A Minecraft Java server on FadeHost takes about two minutes from signup to first join, and a basic survival server needs no config files.

  1. 1

    Create your server

Start the free 7-day trial (no credit card) or pick a plan. 2 GB runs vanilla or a light plugin server comfortably; plan 4-5 GB for modpacks. Then hit Create Server in the panel, choose Minecraft: Java Edition and your region, and the server installs itself. Your server's address and port appear on the server page as soon as it's up.

  2. 2

    Pick your server software

In the panel, choose Vanilla, Paper (recommended for plugins), Purpur, Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or a proxy like Velocity, and switch any time. Version updates roll out with rollback support.

  3. 3

    Add plugins or mods

Install modpacks with one click from CurseForge or Modrinth, or drop plugin JARs into the plugins folder with the web file manager or SFTP. Restart to load them.

  4. 4

    Set your MOTD and whitelist

Configure the server list message, max players, difficulty and whitelist from the Settings tab. No server.properties editing required, though full file access is there if you want it.

  5. 5

    Join and invite friends

In Minecraft choose Multiplayer → Add Server and paste the address from your server page. Friends use the same address. Enable auto-hibernate and the server sleeps when empty and wakes the moment someone joins.

Java Edition connects from PC (Windows, macOS, Linux). For phones and consoles, see Minecraft Bedrock hosting, or run Geyser on Java to accept both.

What the panel hands you

Address
On the server page as soon as it is up, port and all.
Console and files
Live console, a file manager and SFTP, from the first minute.
Backups
Daily, with one-click restore and a backup you can take by hand before a risky change.
If it goes wrong
The crash doctor reads the log and tells you the cause in plain words.

What a Minecraft: Java Edition server costs

You pay for RAM, not for the title: a server slot is $2.50 a month with 1 GB and 30 GB of storage, and every gigabyte after that is $1. A year is ten months. The same subscription runs Minecraft: Java Edition today and anything else we host tomorrow.

Free: a 2 GB server

Every verified account can claim a free Minecraft Java server with 2 GB of RAM, the full control panel and a free subdomain. It sleeps when it is empty and wakes when someone joins. No card, no queue, no daily renewal clicks. The free server

Lite: $2 a month

The same 2 GB and the same world, 30 GB of storage, up to 20 players and automatic backups, and it waits 15 minutes before sleeping instead of one. $20 a year. Add a Lite server

Who can join

The honest version, so nobody buys a server their friends cannot reach.

Platforms

Java Edition on Windows, macOS and Linux. Phones, tablets and consoles run Bedrock, which cannot join a Java server on its own.

Crossplay

Turn on Bedrock crossplay in Settings and Bedrock players join the same world through Geyser and Floodgate, without a Java account.

Regions and latency

Pick Europe or North America when you create the server. North America has nodes on the east coast and the west coast, Europe in the west, all on NVMe storage with DDoS protection in front. Players on the same continent as the server see 20 to 60 ms, which Minecraft: Java Edition handles well; a group split across the Atlantic should host where most of them are. Changing region later is a backup, a new server in the other region, and a restore.

Frequently asked questions

What Minecraft Java server software do you support?
Vanilla (including Snapshots), Paper, Purpur, Spigot, Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, Mohist, and the Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall proxies. You can switch software or versions at any time from the panel, and we roll new Minecraft versions out within hours of release.
How much RAM do I need for a Minecraft Java server?
2 GB runs Vanilla or a light Paper server for up to ~10 friends. Plugin servers with 20+ players are happiest at 3-4 GB, small modpacks at 4-6 GB, and kitchen-sink packs like All The Mods want 8 GB or more. You can add RAM at any time in a couple of clicks, with no reinstall and no migration.
Can I install modpacks automatically?
Yes. One-click installation from CurseForge and Modrinth, straight from the panel. Most packs are playable in under a minute. Custom or private packs can be uploaded through the file manager or SFTP.
Can Bedrock players join my Java server?
Yes, with the Geyser plugin on a Paper server (plus Floodgate so Bedrock players don't need a Java account). Install both from the panel's plugin tools, and phones, consoles and Windows Bedrock clients can join the same world as Java players.
Can I upload my existing world?
Absolutely. Zip your world folder, upload it via the file manager or SFTP, point server.properties at it and restart. Single-player worlds, Realms exports and worlds from other hosts all work, and our support will happily do the migration with you.
What happens when nobody is online? Do I pay for an empty server?
You can enable auto-hibernation: the server goes to sleep when it's been empty for a while and wakes automatically the moment someone clicks join, and they even wait in a lightweight lobby while it boots. Your world stays exactly as it was, and hibernating servers free up your RAM pool for other servers.
Do I get a free subdomain and how do friends connect?
Every server gets a free custom address like yourname.fmc.pw, and you can connect your own domain too: the panel hands you the exact DNS record and verifies it live. Friends just type it into Add Server, with no IP addresses and no port numbers on default setups.
