Minecraft Server Ping Test

Your latency from this browser to the machines that host servers in each of our four regions, measured directly and not through a CDN. The lowest number is the region to create your server in.

Eight timed requests per region on a warm connection; the big number is the median, the small one the best. Under 50 ms is excellent, under 100 ms good, under 150 ms playable.

Create a server in the region with the lowest ping.
Minecraft, 35 other games, bots and apps run in every region. A 7-day trial needs no card, and the free Minecraft server is placed in Europe or North America, whichever is closer.

How the test works

Each region has one machine that answers HTTPS with a public certificate. The page opens a connection to it, which costs a few round trips, then sends eight small requests on that same connection and times each one. On a kept-alive connection a request is one round trip plus about a millisecond of server time, so the numbers track the ping the game would show. The test talks to the machine's own address, not to a content network in front of it, so the distance you see is the distance to the region.

Reading the numbers

PingIn the game
Under 50 msInstant. Nothing to notice, PvP feels local.
50 to 100 msFine for everything. A hit or a placed block lands a blink late.
100 to 150 msPlayable. Fights and fast mining feel slightly delayed; building and exploring are unaffected.
Over 150 msNoticeable. Rubber-banding in fights, blocks that pop back. Pick a closer region for the people who play most.

Players on Wi-Fi, mobile data or a VPN add their own latency on top; nothing on the server side changes that. Run the test twice and take the lower numbers, since the first run can catch a busy moment on your own network.

Choosing a region for a group

Place the server where most players are. Two players in Germany and one in Texas do better on Europe West (about 110 ms for Texas) than on USA West (about 150 ms for Germany). For an even split across the Atlantic, Canada East sits in the middle: roughly 90 ms from Western Europe and 70 ms from the US East Coast. Asia Pacific serves Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia's east coast at 20 to 100 ms.

FAQ

What does this test measure?

The round trip from your browser to the machine that hosts servers in each region: the same machine your Minecraft server, bot or app would run on. The first request opens the connection; the timed requests reuse it, so each one is one network round trip plus about a millisecond of server time. That is close to the ping Minecraft shows in the tab list.

Which ping is good for Minecraft?

Under 50 ms feels instant. 50 to 100 ms is fine for building, exploring and most PvP. 100 to 150 ms is playable with a little delay on block placement and hits. Above 150 ms you notice rubber-banding in fights and mining. Pick the region with the lowest number for the players who will be on most; a server for friends on two continents is best placed near the majority or in the middle.

Why does my result differ from the in-game ping?

A browser cannot open a raw connection like the game does, so it measures an HTTPS request instead. On a warm connection that costs one round trip, the same as a keep-alive packet in the game, plus a millisecond or two. Wi-Fi, a VPN, a phone on mobile data or a busy home network add the same latency to both. Run the test twice and trust the lower numbers.

Can this test ping any Minecraft server address?

No. A web page cannot open TCP connections to arbitrary hosts, so the test only reaches machines that answer HTTPS with a public certificate, which is how it reaches our four regions. To check whether some other server is online and what it reports, use the Server Status Checker, which queries it from our side.

A region shows unreachable. Why?

Three of the four checks use port 8443, and some school, office and public networks block ports other than 80 and 443. A browser extension that blocks requests, or a network that sends everything through a proxy, has the same effect. Try from a phone on mobile data or from home; the region is not down.

Does the test go through Cloudflare?

No. Many hosts show you a ping to a CDN edge near you, which says nothing about where the server is. This test uses the direct address of each machine, so the number is the real distance between you and the region.

How do I choose the region when I create a server?

Every server, bot, app and database on FadeHost asks for a region when you create it. Pick the one with the lowest ping for most of your players. A server can be moved later by opening a ticket; the world and settings come along.

Where exactly are the machines?

Europe West is in France, Canada East near Montreal, USA West in Oregon and Asia Pacific in Singapore. Each region runs the same hardware and the same panel; the only difference is where the players are.
