Vintage Story server requirements

What the server needs before you pick a size. 2 GB of RAM is the minimum, and the table below sizes it by player count.

RAM
2 GB minimum. Every extra gigabyte is $1 a month and can be added or removed later without a reinstall.
CPU
World generation is heavy on one core; a fast core matters more than many.
Disk
The server is about 150 MB; an explored world grows to a few gigabytes.
Ports
One port, TCP and UDP, assigned for you.
Mods and plugins
Mods from mods.vintagestory.at go in the Mods folder; client-side mods are installed by the players.
Your existing world
Upload a .vcdbs save into the Saves folder and enter its name in the settings.

RAM by player count

Sizing by player count. Start small and add RAM later in a couple of clicks, with no reinstall. For a Minecraft server with plugins, mods or Bedrock players, the RAM calculator sizes it from what servers hosted here use.

What a Vintage Story server costs

You pay for RAM, not for the title: a server slot is $2.50 a month with 1 GB and 30 GB of storage, and every gigabyte after that is $1. A year is ten months. The same subscription runs Vintage Story today and anything else we host tomorrow.

Who can join

The honest version, so nobody buys a server their friends cannot reach.

Platforms

PC, bought from vintagestory.at: Windows, macOS and Linux. Not on Steam.

Crossplay

All PC players join the same server.

Regions and latency

Pick Europe or North America when you create the server. North America has nodes on the east coast and the west coast, Europe in the west, all on NVMe storage with DDoS protection in front. Players on the same continent as the server see 20 to 60 ms, which Vintage Story handles well; a group split across the Atlantic should host where most of them are. Changing region later is a backup, a new server in the other region, and a restore.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Vintage Story server need?
Two gigabytes runs a few friends on a young world. Four gigabytes is the comfortable size for a group that explores a lot; the server keeps chunks of the explored world in memory. Ten or more players want six to eight.
Which version does the server run?
The newest stable release from vintagestory.at, checked at every start. Players join with the same version; the game tells them if theirs is behind.
Can I use mods?
Yes. Upload mods from the Vintage Story mod database into the Mods folder and restart. Mods with a client side need to be installed by the players too.
Can I bring my own world?
Yes. Upload the .vcdbs save into the Saves folder and enter its name on the settings page; the server loads it on the next start.
Is the server listed publicly?
Only if you switch the public listing on. With it off, players need the address, and a join password if you set one.
Do players need to own the game?
Each player needs a Vintage Story account with the game. The server itself needs no licence.
