Necesse server requirements

What the server needs before you pick a size. 1 GB of RAM is the minimum, and the table below sizes it by player count.

RAM
1 GB minimum. Every extra gigabyte is $1 a month and can be added or removed later without a reinstall.
CPU
Light. One core keeps up with a busy world; the pause-when-empty switch means an empty server uses almost nothing.
Disk
The server is about 150 MB; worlds stay small.
Ports
One UDP port, assigned for you.
Mods and plugins
Mod files go in the server's mods folder; players install the same mods.
Your existing world
Upload a world save file into the saves folder and pick it by name; single-player worlds work.

RAM by player count

Sizing by player count. Start small and add RAM later in a couple of clicks, with no reinstall. For a Minecraft server with plugins, mods or Bedrock players, the RAM calculator sizes it from what servers hosted here use.

PlayersRecommended RAMNotes
1 to 41 GBA small group on a fresh world
4 to 102 GBBusy world, many settlers
10 to 203 GBLarge explored world, mods

What a Necesse server costs

You pay for RAM, not for the title: a server slot is $2.50 a month with 1 GB and 30 GB of storage, and every gigabyte after that is $1. A year is ten months. The same subscription runs Necesse today and anything else we host tomorrow.

Who can join

The honest version, so nobody buys a server their friends cannot reach.

Platforms

PC on Steam: Windows, macOS and Linux.

Crossplay

All PC players join the same server.

Regions and latency

Pick Europe or North America when you create the server. North America has nodes on the east coast and the west coast, Europe in the west, all on NVMe storage with DDoS protection in front. Players on the same continent as the server see 20 to 60 ms, which Necesse handles well; a group split across the Atlantic should host where most of them are. Changing region later is a backup, a new server in the other region, and a restore.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Necesse server need?
Necesse is light. One gigabyte runs a small group, two gigabytes is comfortable for a busy world with many settlers and islands explored.
Can I keep the world running while nobody is on?
Yes. The pause-when-empty switch is on by default so nothing happens without you; turn it off and the world keeps going, raids included.
How do I get owner permissions?
Put your player name in the owner field of the settings page. The player who joins with that name gets owner permissions on the server.
Can I bring my single-player world?
Yes. Upload the world's save file into the server's saves folder and select it by name in the settings; the format is the same.
Do players need to own Necesse?
Each player needs the game on Steam. The server itself needs no licence, so the slot is purely infrastructure.
Does it support mods?
Yes. Put the mod files into the server's mods folder; players need the same mods installed on their side.
